JULY WAPA BILLS REFLECT HIGHER FUEL SURCHARGE

As if customers hadn't already noticed, the Water and Power Authority issued a release Tuesday stating that all electric and water bills since July 1 have carried the recently approved higher fuel surcharge.
Under its so-called levelized energy adjustment clause, WAPA can change the rate of the fuel surcharge to customers every six months to reflect changing conditions in the international oil market. Oil prices have risen markedly in the last year. The purpose of the surcharge is to recover actual fuel costs," the release stated.
When the Public Services Commission failed to act within the specified time on the latest request from WAPA for an increase in the surcharge rate, the WAPA board itself imposed the increase. According to the release, the new rate is about 5 cents per kilowatt hour for electricity and $1.52 per thousand gallons for water.
