Upholding the name of Charlotte Amalie High School
by Staff
From Wednesday, March 22 to Friday, March 24, 2000, the administration of the Charlotte Amalie High School held special assemblies in an effort to re-instill school pride and reinforce the rules and regulations that govern Virgin Islands public schools, and in particular, the Charlotte Amalie High School.
These sessions each began with the recital of the Alma Mater of this noble high school. The Alma Mater of this school, said Prinipal Jeanette Smith-Barry, "helps each Chickenhawk to realize his or her dreams and goals, and instill a sense of pride in him or her self and the school."
Students also recited the poems, "Who am I ?" by Richard A. Schrader,Sr. of St. Croix; "I am a Virgin Islands Child, " by Larry Sewer of St. John; and " In This House," by Jaribu of St. Thomas.
These three poems sent positive messages to students whom Smith-Barry hopes to reach and to instill in them the pride of being a Virgin Islander.
Smith-Barry mentioned the negative events and influences that have been tarnishing the school’s image.
She noted that a small percentage of the school’s student body are giving the community an overall, negative image of the school, and it must stop immediately.
The principal noted that at this school the zero tolerance policy is always in effect at C.A.H.S.
The zero tolerance policy is in keeping with President Clinton’s Goal 2000 initiatives and the policies of the Department of Education and the Board of Education.
In spite of the negatives, Mrs. Howell, assistant principal, was able to list the numerous accomplishments of students during the year. It was obvious that a lot of good things have been happening at C. A. H. S.
In a survey conducted among the band students, the majority of the students stated that the assemblies were needed.
They described the assemblies as educational, informative, beneficial and necessary in these troubled times.
The Journalism class hopes that all who enter these halls, will strive to live up to our motto " To Excel Always."
