The Caribbean Genealogy Library (CGL) is having an open house from 5:30 – 8 p.m. on Friday, June 1. Selections from CGL’s collections will be on display, including rare books, maps, historical images, funeral booklets and family genealogies. Volunteers will demonstrate how to use Virgin Islands census records from 1841-1911 and to assist with searches for family members on the Ancestry.com Web site.
CGL is the only genealogy research library in the Virgin Islands. It houses an extensive Caribbean book collection, and several special interest sections covering other areas of the world. Also in the collections are V.I. church records, land records, funeral booklets, census records, and information from both the U.S. and the Danish National Archives as they pertain to the Virgin Islands. CGL’s affiliation with the Family History Library (FHL) in Utah, affords it access to the FHL genealogical library materials. If records from the FHL collection are not already on hand at CGL, documents and microfilm can be ordered for direct delivery within a few weeks.
CGL is located next to Mango Tango Art Gallery at Al Cohen’s Mall on Raphune Hill. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call CGL at 714-2136.
