Feb. 27, 2008 – The University of the Virgin Islands will host Afternoon on the Green, its annual food, fun and family event, from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 9, at the Herman E. Moore Golf Course, St. Thomas campus. The event will feature food prepared by some of the island's best cooks, children's activities and music by Tortola's Lashing Dogs. There will also be entertainment by the Mungo Niles Heritage Dancers and the Caribbean Ritual Dancers. This year's theme is "Be Seen on the Green for Cultural Cuisine," according to a press release from UVI.
"It's a time to see friends that you may not normally see and to get the family to enjoy a fun-filled activity together," Afternoon on the Green Committee Chairwoman Peggy Smith said. "Let someone else do the cooking while you enjoy a variety of dishes."
Some of those dishes will include: Corrine's Proctor's "cashew cheese macaroni pie," Cheryl Miller's "ragin' cajun gumbo" and Osbert Potter's "Sweetback's bread pudding." Two-time winner Arthur Raymo III will bring his "Brigo's firehouse salmon" for the third consecutive year. There will be hamburgers, hotdogs and ribs from the grill. Food is sold at $2 a taste. Patrons who purchase $10 of tickets will be able to judge food. Judging, based on originality, taste and creativity, will take place from noon to 1 p.m.
New this year is the Dubmasters Competition featuring ital food prepared by some of the island's best ital cooks. Also new this year is a Jeopardy competition that will test participants' knowledge of the territory and the university. For the first time, there will be May Pole dancing. Representatives from the V.I. Council on the Arts and the V.I. Fire Department will distribute free copies of the book "Fahrenheit 451."
Clint Ferris returns with an ice cream making demonstration. Children's activities include coloring, bouncers and the inflatable human spheres. There will be displays by UVI academic divisions and enrollment services will accept applications on-site. The application fee will be waived for applicants that provide completed applications with official transcripts and test scores.
Food is the key for Afternoon on the Green and more cooks are needed. Volunteers with health cards are also needed. To donate a dish or to volunteer, call the UVI Institutional Advancement Office at 693-1040.
The event is made possible with support from the West Indian Corporation Limited, Bellows International, West Indies Corporation, Premier Wine & Spirits, and Merchant's Market.
Because of Afternoon on the Green, no golfing will be allowed on the golf course from noon on Thursday, March 6, to noon Monday, March 10.
