The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority will begin removing banners and posters from utility poles Saturday.
WAPA spokesperson Patricia Blake Simmonds said hanging banners from utility poles is a hurricane hazard and violates Virgin Islands laws.
Simmonds also said hanging anything from utility poles requires a permit from the Public Works Department and WAPA's approval.
However, in the next sentence Simmonds said, "WAPA will not consent to the hanging of banners from utility poles."
Banners get tangled in electrical lines during windstorms and can cause power outages, she said. She also said that staples and other attachments used to hang posters can puncture linemen's protective gear, causing injuries.
