SEWAGE BEING DISCHARGED IN GALLOWS BAY AREA

Jan. 16, 2002 – The Planning and Natural Resources Department is advising the public not to swim or fish in Christiansted Harbor from Gallows Bay to Fort Christiansvaern because of the discharge of raw sewage in the area.
In a press release Wednesday, PNR Commissioner Dean Plaskett also urged parents to keep their children away from the shoreline in that vicinity.
Plaskett said his department's Environmental Protection Division is investigating the sewage discharge near the Gallows Bay Port Terminal. He said the Public Works Department's sewer collection and conveyance system in Gallows Bay "has been recently suffering from frequent failures resulting in the discharge of raw sewage" into the harbor area.
Public Works is trying to fix the problem and Environmental Planning is continuing to monitor the situation, the release said. No further information was available from PNR.
