NOT EVERYONE WANTS TO RUN WHITE FOLKS OUT

0

Dear Source,
This radio person named Mario Moorhead, is he just prejudiced or did the news
people, who just happen to be white, offend him in some way?
I have been to St. Croix and can personally say that it is not everyone's view to run white people out.
The Virgin Islands are special because of, first the people, then the beauty of the land.
I am thankful that my parents raised me to judge people by their actions and not by the color of their skin.
It makes me wonder, by his conduct, if Moorhead is truly from the Virgin Islands.

COME-FROM-BEHIND VICTORY IN CYCLING RACE

0

Flat tires, a come-from-behind victory and a crash into a kasha bush made for an action-packed V.I. Cycling Federation race Saturday on St. Croix’s rugged north shore.
A group of 16 riders took on the challenge of the grueling-yet beautiful North Shore Race, the Federation’s second competitive road event of the season. "A" group riders did three laps from Salt River Marina to the Carambola Resort for a total of 36 miles. Jamie Keys, the reigning V.I. national champion, led for more than half of the first lap when he suffered a flat tire near Picnics in Paradise.
With Keys out of the picture, Jamie Bate and Jose Prado took turns leading the lead group of riders. About a mile into the second lap on the twisting North Shore Road, Bate made a break away. The move fizzled, though, when he entered a tight, right-hand turn too fast and couldn’t negotiate the curve, ending up slightly injured in a thorn-ridden kasha bush.
The crash enabled Prado, Angel Encarnacion; Tom Guthrie, in his first event since a serious accident between a car and his bike; and Sue Brown to take over the race.
Meanwhile, Keys, working on his own without the benefit of being able to draft other riders, was steadily making up lost ground.
On the final lap near Rust Op Twist, Keys managed to pass the lead group, coming across the line in 1:41:28. He was followed by Prado at 1:45:41, Guthrie at 1:47:36 and Encarnacion at 1:51:13.
Brown, the lone female in the field, finished the 24-mile, two lap B-group challenge in 1:08:41.
That was some 12 minutes ahead of Luke DeFour, who finished in 1:20:15.
The B group also had its share of excitement with a hard sprint to the finish between father and son Will and Nick Franks. While the elder Franks, Will, edged out Nick by a second at 1:25:48, he was in a dead heat with Juancito Gario.
The next event is the Endurance Sports East End Triathlon and Try a Tri at the Divi Carina Bay Resort on March 3.

SEARCH TURNS UP BODY NEAR YACHT HAVEN

0

A 21-year-old New Zealand native apparently drowned over the weekend near the Yacht Haven marina, according to police reports.
Crew members of the yacht Mikala Rose reported to police Sunday morning that another crew member was last seen swimming near the marina Saturday morning around 9:30 a.m. But a search by St. Thomas Rescue personnel Sunday turned up nothing.
Police said the body of the missing crew member was found Monday during a search by Department of Planning and Natural Resources personnel, police and a diver. The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of kin.
Police said an autopsy will be performed to rule out foul play.

WRONGFUL DISCHARGE ALLEGED AGAINST DAILY NEWS

0

Hillary Hodge, longtime photographer for the Virgin Islands Daily News, has filed a claim of wrongful discharge against the paper.
In a suit filed in Territorial Court in December, Hodge alleges that he was terminated because of a job-related medical condition that kept him on sick leave for several months.
His suit does not describe the illness — and Hodge declined to comment on the case Monday — but sources familiar with the situation said Hodge had complained of intense pain in his shoulder from years of carrying heavy camera equipment and was treated for a pinched nerve.
Hodge worked for the Daily News for approximately 21 years and was chief photographer at the time of his separation from the paper.
The initial complaint, filed by Hodge's attorney Desmond Maynard, says Hodge was hospitalized June 29, 2000. An amended complaint lists the start of the problem as Feb. 25, 2000.
On Aug. 3, Hodge gave the Daily News a letter saying he could begin working part-time, but management told him it was full-time or nothing, according to the complaint.
He received a release from his doctor to return to work full-time on Oct. 16, the complaint states, but on Oct. 18, Daily News management told him he had already been replaced and was out of a job.
Hodge is seeking compensatory and punitive damages of an unspecified amount, and reimbursement for legal fees as well as reinstatement.
Attorney Kevin Rames filed a response earlier this month on behalf of the Daily News.
"Plaintiff's employment has not been terminated by Defendant, however at present there is no open photographer position for Plaintiff to fill," the response stated. "To the extent that Plaintiff is determined to have been discharged from his employment, such discharged (sic) is due to Plaintiff's continuous absences from his place of employment affecting the interests of his employer."

STATUS OF SENATE DOWNSIZE BILL QUERIED

0

Sen. Adlah "Foncie" Donastorg has asked the Legislature's chief legal counsel for a progress report on his legislation to reduce the number of senators from 15 to nine.
In a letter made public Monday, Donastorg reminded Constance Krieger that he had submitted the proposal on Jan. 8, before the 24th Legislature was sworn in.
"Additionally, this legislation comes as a result of a referendum whereby the voters overwhelmingly supported a Legislature downsize," Donastorg said in the letter, dated Feb. 22. "It should be among this body's very highest priorities and not subject to delay despite the wishes of controlling authorities who seek to bury it."
Krieger refused to comment on the letter Monday.
Donastorg's measure was also supported by the Source's first reader poll earlier this month, when reducing the size of the Legislature topped poll respondents' concerns by a margin of 2-1/2 to 1 over the No. 2 priority, overriding Gov. Charles W. Turnbull's veto of a measure creating a semi-independent tourism authority.
Nearly a half-dozen bills have already been introduced and assigned in the Legislature; all of them were sponsored by members of the Senate majority bloc. Donastorg is a minority bloc senator.
The letter requests that Krieger submit a brief progress report to Donastorg's office by 5 p.m. Tuesday, with a projected date of completion.
