Man Arrested After Alleged Tire Wrench Assault in Contant

A St. Thomas man was arrested Tuesday after police said he struck a man in the head with a tire wrench and threatened to kill him during a confrontation in Contant, the Virgin Islands Police Department reported.

Officers were dispatched about 7:06 p.m. Tuesday to the area of Wesleyan Church in Contant for a report of a man creating a disturbance while holding a knife, according to the police report.

When officers arrived, they saw a man outside holding a knife. Police said the man went inside a gate and closed it as officers approached.

Officers then spoke with the victim, who told police he had gone to David Burgess’ residence to drop off a vehicle for a relative of Burgess. The victim said Burgess did not want him in the yard and attacked him with a tire wrench and a knife, the police report stated.

Police said the victim reported that Burgess struck him twice in the head with the wrench and threatened to kill him. The victim showed officers a video on his phone that police said captured Burgess assaulting him with the wrench.

Officers observed a laceration on the victim’s head, but he refused medical attention from emergency medical technicians, the report stated.

Police detained Burgess, who was identified by the complainant as the man who carried out the assault, the report stated.

Burgess, 40, was charged with assault third, disturbance of the peace and delaying and obstructing officers discharging their duties. He was booked, processed and turned over to the Bureau of Corrections pending his advice of rights hearing, the report stated.

Bail was set at $25,000 by order of the court, it stated.
