Woman Dies After Suspected Shark Attack at Dorsch Beach

A 56-year-old woman from Minnesota died Thursday after a suspected shark attack at Dorsch Beach on St. Croix, the Virgin Islands Police Department reported.

Police said the 911 Emergency Call Center received multiple calls at about 4:28 p.m. reporting that a female swimmer had been bitten by a shark. Marine units and Fire and Emergency Medical Services were dispatched to the scene, according to the police.

Fire officials confirmed the woman lost an arm during the attack, police said.

Reports initially indicated there may have been a second victim. St. Croix Rescue searched the surrounding beach area but was unable to confirm another victim, according to police.

The woman later succumbed to her injuries. She was identified by next of kin as Arlene Lillis, 56, of Minnesota, police said.

The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is urged to call 911 or the Criminal Investigation Bureau at 340-778-2211.
