St. Croix Teams Dominate Antilles Varsity Volleyball Tournament

The Caribs of Central High School and the Lady Warriors of Good Hope Country Day, both teams from St. Croix, won the 2024 Antilles Varsity Volleyball Tournament, which was held at the MCM Center on St. Thomas over the weekend.

Charlotte Amalie High School (CAHS), All Saints Cathedral School, and the Virgin Islands Montessori School and Peter Gruber International Academy (VIMSPGIA) joined host Antilles School, entering teams in both the male and female divisions from St. Thomas. Good Hope Country Day (GHCD), Central High School, and the Educational Complex School from St. Croix also entered teams in both divisions. Gifft Hill School boys and girls teams represented St. John. Sts. Peter & Paul’s varsity girls team was the final team in the two-day tournament.

The male playoffs started with an upset as the Vikings of All Saints stilled the Hurricane of Antilles in three sets (25-26; 15-25; 15-12). In the second semi-final, the defending champions, Caribs of Central High, took on their Crucian rivals, Barracudas of the Educational Complex. The Caribs took down the Barracudas in two sets (25-21; 25-21).  Central took on All Saints in the male division championship game. The match opened with All Saints looking to pull off back-to-back upsets, winning the first set (25-23). The Caribs fought back and took the second set (25-12). In the final and deciding set, the Caribs proved too much for the Vikings as Central won (15-12) to claim the 2024 Antilles Varsity Male Division Championship. Complex defeated Antilles in the third-place match.

In the first female semi-final match, the public schools from St. Croix faced off. The Lady Barracudas got the best of the Lady Caribs, beating them in three sets (21-25; 25-21; 15-13). The second semi-final was a battle between private schools: GHCD versus Antilles School. The Panthers of GHCD won the opening set (25-18). The Hurricanes came storming back in the second (25-21), forcing a rubber game. This one was a battle all the way to the end. The Panthers managed to hold on to a (15-13) win. GHCD defeated Complex in the title match in straight sets (25-18; 25-23). GHCD Lady Panthers and the Central High School Caribs both successfully defended their crowns and repeated as tournament champions. Central defeated Antilles in the female third-place match.
