The Disability Rights Center of Virgin Islands (DRCVI) and the Virgin Islands Housing Authority (VIHA) have forged a transformative partnership for residents heralding a new era of advocacy through collaboration. The alliance, driven by a shared vision of fostering effective and innovative advocacy, represents a significant leap forward in addressing pressing issues faced by individuals with disabilities within the housing community.
At the heart of this partnership lies a commitment to empowering residents to advocate for themselves and their communities. Through education and career readiness workshops, self-advocacy and self-determination training sessions, and facilitating access to essential disability services, the Disability Rights Center and the Housing Authority aim to ensure that every individual receives the support and resources they need.
These initiatives include anti-stigma campaigns, promoting accessibility in community spaces — including parking and assisting with educational support for children with disabilities.
Disability Rights Center of Virgin Islands Executive Director Angus Drigo praised the collaborative effort and emphasized the need to “reach out to individuals with disabilities where they are.”
Virgin Islands Housing Authority Executive Director Dwayne Alexander praised the partnership, sayng, “This collaboration underscores our dedication to serving the diverse needs of our community and ensuring that individuals with disabilities have equal access to opportunities and resources.”
