VITFF Bulletin: Michelle Smith Sets New V.I. National 400m Hurdle Record!

Virgin Islands Sports Ambassador Michelle Smith, a high school senior at Montverde Academy, took part in the 18th Carolina Spring Break Classic on March 17, in Carolina, Puerto Rico. Smith emerged as the winner in the 400m hurdles event, setting a new national record for the Virgin Islands with a time of 56.06. Michelle also set a meet record, and her time is No. 5 on the all-time list for high school athletes in the United States. This outstanding performance secured her position as the top-ranked athlete in the U20 category worldwide.

In late March, Michelle Smith will represent the Virgin Islands in the 400m hurdles and the 800m at the Caribbean Free Trade Association *CARIFTA) Games, scheduled to take place in Grenada from March 30 to April 1.

Sofia Swindell, a junior at Lawrenceville School and member of the Virgin Islands Track and Field Team, recently participated in the Spring Invitational at IMG 2024, which was held on March 16 in Brandenton, Fla. During the event, Swindell achieved outstanding results. She secured first place in the 200m race with a remarkable personal best time of 23.85 seconds. Additionally, she emerged victorious in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.26 seconds. Swindell also showcased her skills in the triple jump, earning a commendable third place with a jump measuring 11.12m.

Swindell’s remarkable performances have earned her a spot to represent the Virgin Islands in those same 3 events in the upcoming CARIFTA Games, scheduled to be held in Grenada from March 30 to April 1.

In the 400m hurdles event, Sofia Swindell achieved an impressive third place finish with a time of 51.54, marking his fastest season opener. https://youtu.be/BZmhUEn2pZM Just 45 minutes later, he went on to compete in the 400m race, where he achieved a personal best time of 48.05.

Looking ahead, Smith’s next competition will be the Pepsi Florida Relays, taking place in Gainesville, Fla., on April 2 and 3.

Mikaela Smit finished 10th in her heat of the 1500m with a time of 4:59.07.

Mikaela’s next competition will be the Pepsi Florida Relays, taking place in Gainesville, Fla. on April 2 and April 3.
