Sen. Donna A. Frett-Gregory met the first medical resident at the Governor Roy L. Schneider Hospital and Medical Center. The student arrived in the territory earlier this month through a training opportunity made possible as a result of Amendment No. 35-581 offered by Frett-Gregory during the December 2023 legislative session.
Amendment No. 35-581 allows medical interns, residents or fellows who are enrolled in an accredited medical program to work in the territory on a visiting rotation under the supervision of fully licensed doctors employed at the hospital. This Important legislation helps to attract medical
professionals to our shores. Creating this opportunity for medical interns, residents or fellows to join our hospitals under the supervision of licensed doctors allows us to gain needed staff,” said Frett-Gregory.
The senator was accompanied by staff and members of the hospital’s leadership team for a brief overview of the program. The medical interns will work at the hospital for approximately six to eight weeks before returning to the mainland.
“It is always gratifying to witness legislation become reality. I am delighted that we can partner with medical schools across the nation and provide a training ground for their medical residents, interns and fellows,” said Frett-Gregory.
“This program allows the Virgin Islands to be seen and hopefully attract medical professionals permanently to our territory’s hospitals. I look forward to visiting the Governor Juan F. Luis Hospital and Medical Center on St. Croix in the near future as they welcome medical residents,” said Frett-Gregory.
