Loud Sound Disperses Crowd at Village; Pellet Gun Discovered

A loud sound that appeared to be a gunshot but later was discovered to be a falling table, dispersed the crowd at the Village Friday on St. Croix, the V.I. Police Department reported.

At approximately 12:50 a.m. on Friday, VIPD responded to a large crowd dispersing at the Crucian Festival Village due to what sounded like a gunshot; further investigation revealed that a table on the stage fell, causing the loud sound, according to the police report.

During the eager dispersing of the crowd, many individuals were injured and received medical attention, however, no major injuries were reported, the police report stated.

During the commotion, an off-duty police officer observed someone drawing what appeared to be a firearm. The officer engaged the person and was able to retrieve the firearm, which was later revealed to be a pellet gun, the report stated.

This is an ongoing investigation, it said.
