While recognizing Oct. 28 as National First Responders Day, Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. said this year’s observance, with the loss of V.I. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Director Daryl George, is particularly poignant.

In the proclamation, Bryan said that annually hundreds of first responders including nurses, paramedics, emergency medical services personnel, firefighters, police officers, 911 dispatchers, search and rescue organizations, and emergency management services professionals make the greatest sacrifice, “forfeiting their lives in the service of others.”

“On this day we lovingly remember Fire & Emergency Services Director Daryl A. ‘Mousy’ George, Srand the many brave, selfless and compassionate heroes whose service improves the lives of Virgin Islanders and visitors every day, and we offer up tribute to those who have laid down their lives, in their pursuit to protect others,” Bryan said in a news release Saturday.

Bryan noted George, affectionately known as “Mousy,” was not only a firefighter and first responder, but also a brother and friend to all who knew him.
