St. Croix Man Dies After Gunshot to the Head

A St. Croix man was shot in the head after a physical altercation with another man, the V.I. Police Department reported Thursday.

On Thursday at approximately 6:05 p.m., the 911 Emergency Call Center received a report of a gunshot victim in the vicinity of #5 F La Grande Princess on St. Croix. When officers arrived, they came upon a Black man who was lying on the ground with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the head, according to the police report.

Emergency Medical Technicians were on scene and determined that the man had no sign of life. The victim was later identified as 35-year-old Sheldon Liburd, the police report said.

Investigation disclosed that Liburd was involved in a physical altercation with another man. During the altercation, Liburd sustained a single gunshot wound and succumbed to the injury, the report stated.

Liburd’s death marks St. Croix’s 11th homicide of the year and brings the territory’s total to 23 since the start of 2023, according to the Source Homicide List.*

The investigation continues into this matter. Anyone with information is urged to call 911, the CIB Tipline at 340-778-4850 or Crime Stoppers V.I. at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

*The Source Homicide List is a chronological log of the homicides recorded in 2023 in the U.S. Virgin Islands, as reported by the VIPD. Cases are broken down by island. While this listing is based on VIPD reports, the Source does not include suicides or vehicular homicides in its listing, which the police and some other media do. This can lead to a discrepancy in the number of incidents reported.
