A woman was shot and killed on St. Thomas in the early morning hours of Saturday, the V.I. Police Department reported.

VIPD was dispatched to the area of Commandant Gade on St. Thomas regarding shots being fired in the area. Upon arrival to the area and conducting an inspection, contact was made with an unresponsive Black female who appeared to have suffered at least one gunshot wound to her body, according to the police report.

Emergency Medical Technicians also arrived at the scene and checked the female for vital signs. At approximately 3:01 a.m. EMTs concluded that the woman did not have any signs of life, the police report stated.

The identity of the woman is unknown at this time, pending identification from her next of kin, police said.

This death marks St. Thomas’ ninth homicide of the year and brings the territory’s total to 16 since the start of 2023, according to the Source Homicide List.*

*The Source Homicide List is a chronological log of the homicides recorded in 2023 in the U.S. Virgin Islands, as reported by the VIPD. Cases are broken down by island. While this listing is based on VIPD reports, the Source does not include suicides or vehicular homicides in its listing, which the police and some other media do. This can lead to a discrepancy in the number of incidents reported.
