The only thing sweeter than a cool morning breeze over Charlotte Amalie harbor is the sight of J’Ouvert Morning on the waterfront. Thousands of music and Carnival lovers turned out for a musical tramp under the sun and the spray.

Live bands and deejays on flatbed trucks rolled along at a walking pace, frequently stopping for crowds to wuk up. Estimates of the crowd size were not available Thursday, but spectators eagerly scanned the scene … while wukin’ up.

Spectator Sherwin Stone summed it up with a smile. “I’m on the side; got a little wet, got a little powder,” he said

Police Chief Steven Phillip (pictured with Deputy Police Chief Clayton Brown) called the fete largely incident-free, but experiencing medical emergencies for revelers who overindulged or suffered dehydration. “Everybody’s out having fun,” the chief said.

The number of spectators swelled as D.J. Avalanche rolled his sound truck towards Fort Christian, the J’Ouvert finish line.

Tramp done, but more fun to come as revelers streamed towards Carnival Village and a live daytime stage performance.
