A replica of one of history’s most famed ships sailed into Charlotte Amalie harbor Thursday. A self-guided tour of a replica of the Magellan flagship Trinidad is now available from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday through Sunday, at Yacht Haven Grande on St. Thomas. Admission is $15 for adults, $5 for children, and $35 for families.

It took 23 days for the ship to sail first from Spain to to the Canary Islands and then to Puerto Rico before landing at St. Thomas, according to skipper Dani Denorio, an oceanographer with a degree in coastal management from Spain.

The new Trinidad has been sailing for five years since the boat was constructed in Spain, according to Denorio. During the voyage, Denorio and his small crew “work on the wooden structure, on the sails, on everything. It is our home,” the skipper explained.

Crew members are on board to greet and answer questions as people explore the ship. One unique thing about the ship is there is no traditional steering wheel to maneuver it. Instead, the vessel uses a whipstaff, which looks like a pole. More information can be found here.
