Three people were hospitalized after a crowd brawled at the housing community across the street from Lockhart Gardens in Charlotte Amalie on Tuesday evening, police said.

Several shots were fired during the melee at around 6:30 P.M. at Oswald Harris Court where an unknown number of people battled, said V.I. Police Department spokesman Glen Dratte. It appeared no one was shot. Two women were beaten badly enough to be briefly hospitalized and a 26-year-old man was in surgery Tuesday night for a stab wound to the neck.

Police were still investigating Tuesday night what they called a “large fight” to discern its participants and cause.
