Territory Records 67th Death From COVID-19

A 59-year-old St. Thomas man has died of COVID-19, raising the territory’s death toll from the virus to 67, the Health Department reported Wednesday.

The death is the 10th since Sept. 1 as the highly contagious Delta variant of the virus continues to spread in the territory. As of Wednesday, there were 121 active cases on St. Croix, 53 on St. Thomas and 4 on St. John, according to the Health Department’s daily report.

Two patients were hospitalized Wednesday at Schneider Regional Medical Center on St. Thomas, and six at Juan F. Luis Hospital on St. Croix, none of them ventilated, according to daily reports from both hospitals.

“Yesterday, we had 1 COVID patient in house. Literally, overnight, we went from 1 patient to 6 patients,” Luis Hospital reported on its Facebook page.

The Health Department continues to work to slow the spread of COVID-19. Residents are urged to continue to follow precautionary measures in place since the start of the pandemic in March 2020: practice social distancing, wear a mask when in the company of others outside of those in your household, clean frequently used areas thoroughly, and wash your hands often with soap and warm water.

Getting the COVID-19 vaccine, which is free and readily available in the USVI, can prevent severe illness and death. To schedule an appointment, call 340-777-8227 or visit covid19usvi.com/vaccines. Walk-ins are also accepted at the Health Department’s Community Vaccination Centers.

St. Croix’s Community Vaccination Center is located at the Nissan Center in La Grande Princesse, adjacent to the Honda Dealership and The Paint Shop, on the same side of the street as Food Town.

On St. Thomas the Community Vaccination Center is located at the Community Health Clinic on the second floor at the Schneider Regional Medical Center.
