Liberty Foundation Awards $50,000 Donation to Community Foundation of the VI

Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands

The Liberty Foundation awarded $50,000 to the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands to expand its corporate social responsibility commitment outside of Puerto Rico. Liberty Communications now serves mobile customers in the U.S. Virgin Islands since the acquisition of AT&T’s operations in the territory last November.

“CFVI has a long-standing service record with some of the most vulnerable communities in the U.S.V.I. We immediately realized that this organization’s mission matches our four pillars: education, arts and culture, social well-being and environmental protection. Thus, our donation will be distributed among CFVI programs that work with these four areas and cover the most urgent needs in each one,” said Naji Khoury, president of Liberty Foundation, as well as president and CEO of the company.

“In addition, we will seek to have a positive impact in all of the islands comprising the U.S.V.I., not just the main ones,” Khoury said.

Some of the programs that CFVI will work on, thanks to Liberty Foundation’s donation, include its Learning Loss Summer Program, arts and culture projects, mangrove restoration efforts, rapid response support for the islands’ four largest social services providers, and support for local foster homes.

CFVI’s donation was awarded by Liberty Foundation as part of its 23rd edition of the annual Liberty Foundation Golf Invitational – A New Reality Tournament, which was held in a virtual format on Dec. 4, 2020. The event awarded a record-breaking donation of $500,000 distributed among 23 nonprofit organizations in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

“We are truly grateful to Liberty Foundation and Liberty Communications for their timely outreach upon entering the U.S.V.I. market. Their commitment to being a part of the communities they serve is truly inspiring,” commented Anna Wheatley Scarbriel, Ph.D., vice president and director of grants and programs for CFVI. “We look forward to working together to engage Liberty Foundation and its employees in supporting a better future for our Virgin Islands community,” she said.

Founded in 1990, the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands serves donors and nonprofit organizations in the Virgin Islands that work to ensure quality of life for the USVI’s most vulnerable communities. CFVI seeks to do this by building a collection of permanent funds that can award grants to organizations and programs that enhance the educational, physical, social, cultural and environmental well-being of the people of the V.I.

“We want to replicate the same positive effect in the USVI that we have seen with the donations Liberty Foundation has granted to Puerto Rican nonprofits. We are thrilled to work with CFVI’s excellent staff members and help them to make the most of the funds from this donation, which came from the 23rd Liberty Foundation Golf Invitational,” stated Yadira Valdivia, executive director of Liberty Foundation
