A socially distanced Freedom Walk will be held on Monday, Jan. 18, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The walk, sponsored by the Iota Phi Lambda Sorority Epsilon Zeta Chapter, will begin at 7 a.m. in the Fort Christian parking lot, head toward Havensight and end back at Fort Christian.

The Freedom Walk was first organized eight years ago by the Ulla Muller Elementary School Bamboula Dancers and Drummers to honor King’s legacy. This year’s walk is intended to continue the tradition and to also honor those first organizers and current Bamboula dancers and drummers who are unable to participate due to safety concerns.

Organizers reminded participants to wear a mask and remain socially distanced as the walk progresses. Leniese Mercer, the organizer and chairwoman of the Black History Committee for the Iota Phi Lambda Sorority Epsilon Zeta Chapter, can be reached for questions at 340-201-5057.
