St. John Has Territory’s First Homicide of 2021

A man was shot and killed late on New Year’s Day in Cruz Bay, marking the first homicide in the territory on the first day of the new year.

Police said the victim was identified by family as 28-year-old Lessroy Gumbs.

According to the police report, at 11:42 p.m., Jan. 1, the 911 emergency call center received a call of shots fired in Cruz Bay in the vicinity of Pine Peace. Officers traveled to the location and found an unresponsive male, later identified as Gumbs, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical technicians on the scene concluded that the victim had no vital signs.

Police urged anyone with information about this incident to contact police by calling 911, the Criminal Investigation Bureau at 340-774-2211 ext. 5617 or the anonymous tip services, Crime Stoppers USVI, at 1-800-222-8477 (1-800-222-TIPS). Information reported to Crime Stoppers that results in the resolution of a crime can earn the caller an anonymous cash reward.
