Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. joined Public Works Commissioner Nelson Petty Jr. Wednesday for a ground-breaking ceremony for the new Virgin Islands Transportation System (VITRAN) maintenance and operations facility on St. Croix.

The facility is being built to replace the 30-year-old current facility that lacks the space and equipment necessary to maintain VITRAN, according to a Government House press release.

As designed, the new facility is 14,950 square feet and will be the primary operating facility for VITRAN. It will be comprised of three buildings: an operations facility, a bus-washing building and a tire storage building.

The new facility also will include four service bays outfitted to perform complete maintenance of all transit vehicles, as well as the administrative offices for all of VITRAN’s St. Croix staff.

The new buildings will be in compliance with green building certifications and include sky lighting, solar water heaters, insulation radiant barriers, UV reflectors, energy-efficient lighting and other energy-saving features, the press release stated.

The cost of the new facility is $6,702,915.
