As hundreds of thousands of small businesses are re-branding, restructuring, and in some cases permanently closing due to the COVID-19, The Pelican Shop, a local cigar lounge, takes to the internet with innovation and creativity. Founder Akil Petersen opened Feb. 2, 2020, to find himself similar to the 30.7 million small business owners finding new ways to remain open during this global pandemic by taking to the internet with a video blog series over cigars, “Shop Talk.”

Launched in partnership with lead tobacconist Shane Toms in late April 2020, “Shop Talk” has been highlighted by national brands, such as Kafie 1901, Foundation Cigar Co. and Warped Cigars, and has garnered thousands of views via Facebook.

“Considering the times, I remain optimistic as a new business owner with employees because we were able to gain loyal customers in the short time we opened prior to the shutdown,” said Petersen, founder of The Pelican Shop. “Cigars may not be a seen as essential, but the ‘brothers and sisters of the leaf’ who were flocking to the shop were a real community.”

”Shop Talk” has become a sanctuary for those who miss the fun atmosphere, friendly bartenders and plush leather couches of The Pelican Shop located in the AH Riise Mall on Waterfront, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. And despite re-opening in May in compliance with local ordinances and safety measures, the newly re-launched website: www.thepelicashopvi.com is still seeing the majority of business with online sales and quirky, pelican branded merchandise.

With the newest buzz words of shifting business to social distancing, The Pelican Shop is a reminder more than ever to continue to support local and remain connected.
