Bryan Meets With Local and Regional Cricket Organizations

Leeward Islands Cricket Board President Enoch Lewis, left, makes a point to Governor Albert Bryan Jr. and Lieutenant Governor Tregenza A. Roach during a meeting on St. Thomas on Tuesday. Seated next to Lewis are Cricket West Indies President Richard Skerritt and V.I. Cricket Board President Adeline Alexander.

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. met Monday, Nov. 11, with representatives of local and regional cricket organizations about the state of the sport of cricket in the territory.

During a meeting with Adeline Alexander, president of the Virgin Islands Cricket Board; Richard Skerritt, president of Cricket West Indies; and Enoch Lewis, president of the Leeward Islands Cricket Board, the governor discussed possible partnerships between the Government of the Virgin Islands and the cricket organizations.

Cricket has more than one billion fans globally, with the Indian sub-continent alone constituting more than 90 percent of them, according to the largest ever market research into the sport conducted by the International Cricket Council.

The governor also discussed the efforts of the Department of Sports, Parks and Recreation to find a new cricket pitch on St. Thomas, as well as planned enhancements to the cricket pitch on St. Croix.

The meeting is an example of Gov. Bryan’s push to support sports in the territory.

“We’ve spent almost $100 million rebuilding our sports facilities, and we have to find ways to capitalize on that and provide meaningful sports opportunities for residents,” Bryan has said.

In keeping with that initiative, he has arranged for a soccer match on Friday, Nov. 15, between the Major League Soccer team D.C. United and the Bermuda Men’s National Team.

The match starts at 7 p.m. at the soccer field in Estate Bethlehem on St. Croix. Tickets are $20 for adults, and children are admitted for free. Tickets are available at Le Baron in Sunny Isle Shopping Center Mini Mall, One Love Service Station in Princesse, Jane’s Bridal Boutique (across from Plaza Extra West), and Urban Threadz on St. Croix and St. Thomas.
