At its weekly meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 30, Rotary St. Thomas II hosted visiting Rotarian Kendall Strachan, past president of the Rotary Club of Providence in The Bahamas and member of the Bahamas Recovery Team. Rotarian Strachan addressed the Rotary Club of St. Thomas II with an update on post hurricane conditions in The Bahamas, which are extremely serious and challenging. Recovery efforts are in progress and there is a long road ahead.

As a result of fundraisers conducted by Rotary St. Thomas II as well as donations from individual Rotarians in the club, it was able to provide a generous contribution of $20,000 for post hurricane relief, which will be distributed in The Bahamas through Rotary efforts for a variety of needs. Special emphasis will be placed on the sustainable rebuilding of homes and schools.

Dorian affected the Abaco Islands and Grand Bahama Island as a Category 5 hurricane causing devastating damage that has been estimated to be in excess of $7 billion; much remains to be done that will take significant time and effort. More than 70,000 people were left homeless and the death toll was significant, as well.

Rotarians will continue to play a major role in the recovery effort although many have been, themselves, directly affected.
