System Likely to Bring More Rain by Tuesday

An area of disturbed weather east of the Lesser Antilles has has become better organized with a circulation beginning to form, which may lead to formation of a tropical or sub-tropical system passing through the region in the next week, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Designated Invest 96-L, the system was about 350 miles east-southeast of the Leeward Islands Sunday morning. Showers activity has increased and become a little better organized, the NHC reported.

Environmental conditions remain unfavorable for immediate development into a tropical or sub-tropical system, but may become more favorable by Tuesday and Wednesday as 96-L moves near or just north of the Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico and Hispaniola. The NHC gave the system a 20 percent chance of development through Monday, but a 70 percent chance within five days.

If the system develops into a tropical storm, it would be named Patty.

The disturbance likely will bring heavy rainfall with gusty winds and rough seas beginning across the Leeward Islands on Monday, continuing into Tuesday. This squally weather is expected to spread across the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico by Tuesday and then across Hispaniola on Tuesday night and Wednesday.
