WAPA Restores Service After Rotating Interruptions

The V.I. Water and Power Authority at 9:31 p.m. Thursday was able to fully restored electricity to all customers affected by challenges to the power plant.

Two of WAPA’s generating units – Units 15 and 18 – a pair of 20-megawatt generators, had tripped off line periodically Wednesday  causing service interruptions to feeders across the islands of St. Thomas and St. John.

Between 5 and 6 p.m. Wednesday, customers on a portion of Feeders 7A and 8B experienced service interruptions.

For one hour beginning at 6:10 p.m., about 1,000 customers on Feeder 10B, primarily the Frenchman’s Bay area, experienced a service interruption.

At 9:31 p.m., as the demand for power dropped off, WAPA was able to restore service and the limited rotating schedule of service interruptions was suspended. All large commercial customers who had previously switched to their standby power to allow WAPA to better manage its limited generation capacity and stabilize the power plant were returned to the grid by 10:30 p.m.

Repair work continued on Unit 18 late Wednesday night. The 20-megawatt generator tripped off line earlier Wednesday and was unavailable as of Wednesday night. Units 14, 15 and 25 were on line.

This gets tiring, I mean there is no bad weather or any other mitigating factor to power interruption. It would seem instead of a certain person spending a kings ransom on his housing, he should tighten his belt like the rest of us and live in an apartment. The Kimmelman Cancer Center has no chemotherapy , WAPA has no power and for sure our Emperor has no clothes.
