The Virgin Islands Port Authority (VIPA) has hired Custom Builders to expand the electrical room at the Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas, according to a press release issued Tuesday by VIPA Executive Director Carlton Dowe. The first phase of the project should begin within the next two weeks.
In addition to the expansion of the electrical room, a new generator will be installed to support the needs of the terminal. “The existing generator currently cannot provide power to the entire terminal. During a power outage some areas of the terminal are left without power, air conditioning and other amenities. The installation of this new generator will ensure that our terminal is fully operational during an outage.” said Dowe.
The $4.9 million project is funded via the federal Passenger Facility Charge (PFC) program and VIPA’s Fiscal Year 2017 operating budget. The project should be completed by August 2017.
