Second Stabbing Extends Lockdown at Golden Grove Prison

A detainee was stabbed at the Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility and Detention Center on St. Croix on Tuesday morning, the second stabbing in less than a week, the Bureau of Corrections confirmed Wednesday.

Tuesday’s victim, Jermaine Ducreay, was being detained pending trial, according to BOC Public Information Officer Juel Anderson. Detainee Nkosi Parris allegedly stabbed Ducreay multiple times while both were in a recreation area of the prison.

Ducreay was taken to the hospital and received stitches.

Parris was subdued by staff and the weapon recovered. He was placed in lock down, meaning he was locked in his cell, and subsequently charged with third-degree assault, according to Anderson.

The victim, Ducreay, is being detained for contempt of court and the alleged assailant is awaiting trial for first-degree murder, according to Anderson.

Asked about media reports that a corrections officer was assaulted, Anderson said one of the guards who subdued Parris received damage to his clothing but was not assaulted or personally injured.

The prison has been on lockdown since Saturday when prisoner Jamal Fahie allegedly stabbed prisoner Owen Browne, who suffered lacerations to the stomach area, which required immediate surgery. (See Related Links below) Lockdown means all scheduled visits are suspended, while critical services, such as food service, medical/mental health assessments and pharmaceutical dispensing, as well as any medical visits off property, attorney visits and court appearances, continue normally.

According to the BOC, Fahie has been isolated in security control.

Browne is serving a five-year sentence for involuntary manslaughter, and Fahie, a sentence of natural life for first-degree murder.

Anderson confirmed that "the jail was still on lockdown and this still occurred."

Saturday’s incident was between two convicted inmates and Tuesday’s was between two detainees. Detainees awaiting trial are separated from the convicted prisoners, Anderson said, suggesting the two incidents do not appear to be connected.

With regard to the stabbing Saturday, the victim is still in the hospital and no arrests have been made to date, according to Anderson. Fahie is currently serving a life sentence, so a new conviction would not materially affect the length of his sentence.
