An inmate of the Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility was hospitalized in critical condition Saturday at the Juan F. Luis Memorial Hospital after being stabbed by another inmate in the prison, according to the V.I. Bureau of Corrections.
Acting Warden Donald Redwood said that incident took place at about 9 a.m. Saturday in front of the I/J unit. The victim, Owen Browne, suffered lacerations to the stomach area which required immediate surgery.
According to the BOC, the suspect, Jamal Fahie, has been isolated in security control. Investigations into the incident continue by both the V.I. Police Department and the Bureau.
The acting warden said the facility is on lockdown until further notice, which means that all scheduled visits have been suspended. He said critical services, such as food service, medical/mental health assessments and pharmaceutical dispensing, as well as any medical visits off property, attorney visits and court appearances, continued as normal.
“I would like to assure the public that the facility is operating within all security guidelines and protocols to safeguard both the prison population and BOC personnel,” Redwood added.
Browne is serving a five-year sentence for involuntary manslaughter, and Fahie, a sentence of natural life for first degree murder.
