Conch Shell Carving Workshop Promotes Fine Arts Crafting

The final workshop on carving the Queen Conch shell, the official shell of the Virgin Islands, will take place Saturday at the Department of Labor on St. Croix from 8:30 a. m. to 5 p.m.

The workshop, a collaboration between Labor and Rare Earth Studio, is a venture for promoting fine art crafts in the territory.

The workshop will feature Alfonso Vitiello, whose family has been involved in cameo carving since 1790, and professor Gaglione Crescenzo, a renowned teacher of fine cameo carving.

Cindy Richardson, Labor’s director of grants and special projects, said the workshop will be for existing jewelry designers and those interested in learning a new trade. Participants will learn the business benefits of fine jewelry design.
