Seaborne Expands to Dominican Republic

The St. Croix-based Seaborne Airlines announced this week that it will start flying from San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport to La Romana International Airport in the Dominican Republic beginning Dec. 12.

“Seaborne is delighted to be bringing the on-time service we are becoming known for to the Dominican Republic,” said Gary Foss, Seaborne’s president and chief executive officer.

“La Romana is the first of a number of markets that Seaborne plans to serve in the Dominican Republic,” Foss said, noting it will be the 12th airport Seaborne serves throughout the Caribbean.”

For Virgin Islands residents, Foss said it means an easy connection in San Juan from the territory’s airports to the popular resort destination of La Romana. He said it will also make fares a little cheaper than if travelers took one airline to Puerto Rico and another to the Dominican Republic.

Foss said while the territory’s residents may want to travel to La Romana, the connection also opens up the Virgin Islands for people from the Dominican Republic. Additionally the territory has a huge number of residents who hail from the Dominican Republic, and Foss said the connection in San Juan will facilitate travel for them.

The San Juan connection also opens commercial markets because Foss said sales people will be able to travel more easily between the Dominican Republic and the Virgin Islands. “It opens access,” he said.

The flights from San Juan to La Romana will initially operate Thursday and Sunday until March 15, 2014, when service will operate seven days per week. The flight departs San Juan at 1:15 p.m., returning from La Romana at 3:15 p.m.

Seaborne will operate a 34-seat Saab with two pilots, a flight attendant and in-flight service on the route.

To commemorate the launch of the new destination, Seaborne is offering one-way fares as low as $129 for bookings made by Nov. 30 for travel by March 6, 2014, the company said. Flights can be reserved at www.seaborneairlines.com, Expedia, Travelocity or other travel agency.

La Romana, the home of the world-famous Casa de Campo resort and villas, is a popular destination due to the beautiful beaches, renowned golf courses and the adjacent village Altos de Chavon, according to Seaborne.

Seaborne Airlines has operated in the Caribbean for more than 20 years. Seaborne serves San Juan, Vieques, St. Thomas, St. Croix, Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Dominica, Martinique, Guadeloupe and now La Romana.
