2013 Orientation Continues through Friday; UVI 2013-2014 Catalog Available Online High energy motivational speaker Jonathan Sprinkles addressed new and transfer students at UVI’s 2013 Fall Orientation Ceremonies on St. Thomas and St. Croix on Monday, Aug. 12. Orientation activities continue throughout the week. Activities schedules for both campuses are available from the Admissions section of the Admissions section of the UVI Web site – http://www.uvi.edu.
The UVI 2013-2014 Catalog is now available in PDF format from the UVI Web site. It is featured on the Quick Links section of the UVI homepage – http://www.uvi.edu.
Fall semester classes start on Monday, Aug. 19.
UVI to Unveil Reichhold Center’s 35th Season at ‘Business After Hours’ on Thursday, Aug. 22 UVI’s Reichhold Center for the Arts and the St. Thomas-St. John Chamber of Commerce invite the public to the exclusive unveiling of the Reichhold Center’s 35th anniversary 2013-2014 season line-up at “Business After Hours” from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., on Thursday, Aug. 22. The event will take place at the Reichhold Center across from Brewers Beach at UVI’s St. Thomas Campus. This will be the first opportunity for the public to preview scheduled performances for Reichhold’s upcoming season and to purchase tickets. UVI Facebook Updates… 2013 Orientation; UVI Researchers Highlighted As the new semester rapidly approaches, members of the UVI community are encouraged to follow and like the official UVI Facebook page at www.facebook.com/UVI.edu. Recent updates include a look at 2013 New and Transfer Student Orientation activities and a link to the National Science Foundation (NSF) Web site, which is featuring an article and photos about UVI marine researchers. Also available is a look at the official trailer for the student video “The Chase,” which was recently written, directed and filmed by students participating in the 2013 Youth Moviemaking Workshop at UVI’s Reichhold Center for the Arts.
UVI Students Awarded Innovative Scholarships Innovative, a telecommunications provider in the U.S. Virgin Islands, has awarded $12,000 to six new and returning University of the Virgin Islands students attending school in fall 2013. Innovative announced the scholarship awards on July 29.
Each student will receive $2,000 toward tuition, books and materials at UVI. Innovative awarded three students from each district. The St. Croix scholarship recipients are Patricia Francis, Howard Peters and Julian Scatliffe. Recipients from the St. Thomas-St. John District are Lisa-Marie Hodge, Trevonte LaRose and Marisela Narcisse. A news release is available from the UVI homepage – http://www.uvi.edu.
UVI Featured in U.S. Airways In-flight Magazine for August The University of the Virgin Islands is among several of the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) featured in the August issue of the U.S. Airways in-flight magazine. The magazine features profiles of HBCUs in a section titled “HBCU Spells Success.” The UVI feature includes several dramatic photos and an overview of the university titled “Rising to New Heights: An education in paradise at the University of the Virgin Islands.” An online version of the magazine is available from this link http://usairwaysmag.com. The UVI article is on page 96 of the online version of the magazine.
Food Defense Workshop Slated at St. John Academic Center on Aug. 27 A Food Defense Workshop focusing on food safety, food quality and food protection is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. to noon at UVI’s St. John Academic Center on Tuesday, Aug. 27. The workshop is sponsored by UVI’s Cooperative Extension Service and the San Juan District of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Nilda Villegas, an FDA public affairs specialist, will be the presenter. The St. John Academic Center is located on the third floor of the Market Place in Cruz Bay. Workshops on Lowering Home Energy Costs with Federal Assistance Set for Aug. 26-27 Two workshops on lowering home energy costs with federal assistance are scheduled at the V.I. Small Business Development (SBDC) Center training facilities in August. A St. Thomas session is scheduled from 6-9 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 26, at Nisky Center. A St. Croix workshop is set for 6-9 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 27, at the Sion Farm Shopping Center. The workshops are part of a series sponsored by Delegate to Congress Donna Christensen, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Small Business Administration and the VI-SBDC. UVI Labor Day Invitational Volleyball Tourney Begins Aug. 30 at Sports and Fitness Center The UVI Athletic Department will host the 2013 edition of the UVI Annual Labor Day Invitational Volleyball Tournament for Virgin Islands club teams and visiting squads from the Caribbean and U.S. mainland from Friday, Aug. 30, through Sunday, Sept. 1.
U.S.-based teams will be coming from California, Washington D.C., and Utah (the Mountain West Club). Caribbean squads are expected from the British Virgin Islands, St. Kitts, St. Marten, St. Croix and St. Thomas, along with UVI’s Buccaneer men’s and women’s squads. Round-robin format play begins at 7 p.m. on Aug. 30 in the UVI Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas Campus. Matches continue on Saturday at 10 a.m., followed by the championship matches slated for Sunday, Sept. 1, beginning at 6 p.m. The tournament is sponsored by Subway of the Virgin Islands, radio station 107.9 DaVybe and the UVI Athletic Department. VIUCEDD to Offer American Sign Language Classes on St. Thomas, St. Croix in September American Sign Language classes will be offered in September on St. Thomas and St. Croix by the Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD) at UVI. Level I and II courses will run from Sept. 9 to Nov. 14 on both islands. Level I courses will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays, while Level II courses are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays. All courses run from 5:30-7:15 p.m. The St. Thomas classroom location is Teacher Education Room 114. On St. Croix, the course location is the VIUCEDD Office at No. 1 Golden Grove.
The cost is $150 per course. Registration and payment is available online at http://asl.viucedd.org. In person registration and payment is available on St. Thomas in the Teacher Education Building on Wednesdays from noon to 2 p.m. In-person registration and payment is available from Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the VIUCEDD office at No. 1 Golden Grove. UVI’s Historical Publication ‘Proud We Are’ Now on Sale on St. Thomas and St. Croix Copies of the UVI historical publication “Proud We Are” are now available in the UVI Bookstores on both campuses and in the Office of Institutional Advancement on St. Croix. Additionally, they are available from The Owl and the Seahorse in the Monsanto Marine Terminal in Crown Bay on St. Thomas and at the Happy Booker on King Street on St. Croix. The price of the book is $50. They will be available at additional outlets shortly. Visit one of these locations to purchase your copy.
