Having totally dominated the female division of thoroughbred racing on St. Croix over the last year, champion mare Turned to Gold (115) will take on the boys in Sunday’s 7 ½-furlong featured ninth race at the Randall “Doc” James race track.
Turn to Gold is riding a six-race winning streak but will be against a tough field of Class 1 males. There is speed to burn among the males, as Plotter (119), Simon Sez Run (119), and Congo (119) all seem to do their best work when on the lead.
If a speed duel develops among these top three, look for Turn to Gold and According to Jesus in the stretch. The sixth horse in the field, I Confess (114), appears to be a bit overmatched in this race.
Plotter will undoubtedly go off as the favorite, but based on Simon Sez Run’s last performance, he will be right there with the favorite.
Congo came to the islands with high expectation but did not show much early. However, over the last few races he has shown great improvement and went gate to wire in his last.
Turned to Gold was also exceptional in her last outing and her time over the same distance as Congo on that day was almost a full second, or five lengths, better.
This race is shaping up to be an exciting, must-see event for local fans.
