TAP Talent Show Promotes Virgin Islanders

Cherise King sings Sunday during the TAP Entertainment Talent Show.Singers, dancers and models took the stage Sunday at the Teen About Peace Entertainment talent show at the John H. Woodson Junior High School.

The second annual TAP Entertainment talent show, with the theme “Young, Gifted and Talented,” gave youths and adults the opportunity to perform for an audience. The talent show also gave a chance for the community to support local musicians, dancers and models.

Craig Lloyd, coordinator of the show, said TAP Entertainment is a non-profit label dedicated towards promoting youths in the V.I. musically and positively.

“The talent show is simply aimed for kids in the community to showcase their talents,” Lloyd said.

He said the kids came up with the non-profit organization idea.

Lloyd also volunteers his time at the Mon Bijou Center Summer Camp. He said some of the entries in the talent show came from the campers.

He was also amazed by the quick preparation of the show. Lloyd said the members of TAP Entertainment organized the show in three weeks.

The other participants in the talent show were no strangers to the V.I. community. Some of the participants took part in the V.I. Idol competition and some are recording artists. Some of the singers were: Mada “Fyah” Nile, K-Factor, Cherise King, Lil Smith and Nadia, Temisha Libert and D-Nyce.

Although the event began late, the crowd sat patiently as the 20 entries dominated the crowd.

Mada Nile presents T-shirts to two young audience members. The event started off on a good note with Cherise King, who sang three ballads. Mada “Fyah” Nile wowed the audience with her song “Dream Big.” Nile also gave two little girls T-shirt for standing out in crowd while she sang.

K-factor kept the show rocking with their rapping and singing duet. During their performance, a fashion segment paraded on the stage showing summer attire and club scene outfits.

The TAP Kids were the crowd-pleaser, as the kids sang or rapped about striving for excellence and becoming a positive role model in V.I.

Kaheem Desousa, who took part in the TAP Kids, said his rap portion in the show made him nervous, but he was thrilled after it went well.

“I practiced at camp and at home,” Desousa said.

Anumaat Davis Kahina, master of ceremonies, pumped up the audience for every performance. Before each segment, Kahina conducted a raffle. The winners got either jewelry, a day at a spa or a $50 gift certificate.

For the talent show itself, there were no because, as Lloyd said, all of the participants were winners at heart. He said proceeds from the show will help launch a TAP Entertainment Magazine.

The talent show was supported by a grant by the VI Council of the Arts.
