Fight Ends with Man Charged with Gun Possession

A report of a disturbance at the Ludvig Harrigan Court Housing Community in Frederiksted on Wednesday resulted in a man charged with possession of a dangerous weapon, the V.I. Police Department reported.

According to preliminary police reports, about 10:45 a.m. the 911 emergency service received a report of a disturbance at Harrigan. Dispatchers told officers that an armed man was arguing with a woman and that shots had been fired.

Officers arriving at the scene saw a man standing next to a green vehicle, which fit the descriptions that were given by 911. Police said they approached the suspect and saw him throw a small black weapon into the bushes. The suspect was apprehended and officers searched for the weapon in the area it was allegedly tossed. They recovered a black .22 caliber Beretta handgun, the police said.

The suspect was identified as Curt Gonzales.

Gonzalez told police he went to the area to see his girlfriend but she was not home. As he waited for her behind the building, he said, two unknown armed men approached him and attempted to rob him. He said one of the robbers fired a shot and he ran. He said that while he was running, one of his friends threw him the Beretta handgun. He said he tried to fire at the robbers but the gun jammed.

Gonzales was held on a bail of $25,000 and remanded to the Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility.
