With the start of summer just two days away, the weather across the Virgin Islands felt more like winter on Wednesday as a tropical wave made its way across the territory. Thunder was heard and heavy rains fell periodically at some locations. Other areas received just light showers.
It isn’t going to get any better until Thursday afternoon, said meteorologist Jesus Figueroa at the National Weather Service in San Juan.
“But no heavy showers,” he added. “Only light to moderate showers.”
Figueroa said the weather should be clear with normal shower patterns from Friday through the weekend.
“Not much rain is expected,” he said.
Between 7 p.m. Tuesday and 7 p.m. Wednesday, 2.61 inches of rain fell at Henry E. Rohlsen Airport on St. Croix.
“The rain was heavy this morning across St. Croix,” Figueroa said.
During the same time period, one inch fell at Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas.
Weather Station Zephyr at Ajax Peak, St. John, calculates rainfall totals differently. The station had .41 inches of rain between midnight and 7 p.m.
Flood, small craft and thunderstorm alerts were issued by the Weather Service periodically throughout the day.
