According to the Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation (VITFF) Bulletin, in the fall of last year, Eddie Lovett, a junior and hurdler at the University of Florida, contacted the VITFF to express his interest in competing for the Virgin Islands National Track and Field Team. He was instructed to register online with the VITFF to establish his eligibility.
This week, while at the NCAA National Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, Lovett, who had helped his Florida team win the 2012 NCAA national championship while competing for the national championships in the 110m hurdles, was informed that he has been cleared by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) to compete for the Virgin Islands. His times in the competition have qualified him for the IAAF World Championships to be held in Moscow, Russia, later this summer.
Today, he took second place in the 110m hurdles event with a time of 13.32 to help his team share the number one spot in the NCAA Championships title for 2013. The University of Florida tied Texas A&M for the team national championship with a total of 53 points.
Lovett now joins a prestigious group of Virgin Islands National Track and Field athletes who have won NCAA and NJCA individual and/or team championships titles including: Laverne Jones-Ferrette, Flora Hyacinth, Tabarie Henry, Muhammad Halim, Calvin Dascent, David Walters and Terry Charles.
