The Virgin Islands Triathlon Federation (VITF) has scheduled the Spring Fling Junior Triathlon for 8 a.m. on Sunday, March 3, on St Croix’s east end Cramer’s Park. The St. Croix Montessori School will host the swim/bike/run event. Children from all schools and of all abilities, ages 5 to 15, are encouraged to participate. Free T-shirts and snacks will be offered to all competitors.
The triathlon will begin with a point-to-point swim in fairly shallow water along the shoreline, continue with an out-and-back bike ride and conclude with a run around the perimeter of the park. There will be four age groups (5-6 years, 7-8 years, 9-11 years, 12-15 years) and the distances for each leg lengthen for each age group.
The colorful trailer, full of bikes and race equipment, will make its way to the park by 6:15 a.m. to set up and to receive race entry forms. Theresa Harper, secretary of the VITF, said that there are children’s bikes available in various sizes. "We realize that many kids on St. Croix don’t own bikes, so we wanted to have a way for them to participate without the up-keep or expense of owning a bike." The Spring Fling Triathlon is the fourth race in the Junior Tri VI race series. The next event will be a Splash ‘n Dash event on April 14.
