Catamaran Fire Injures One

Fire engulfed a catamaran Saturday at the end of the dock by the Schnitzel House restaurant on St. Thomas’ east end. One person aboard the boat was treated for burns.

The fire was reported at 6:42 p.m., according to a statement from V.I. Fire Services Acting Director Darryl George, and two units responded shortly after. George said firefighting crews launched an immediate suppression operation with two fire lines to fight the fire and protect other vessels in the general vicinity.

Additional fire units and personnel were requested from downtown and west end stations. Crews used a foam agent and other fire fighting techniques to successfully bring the blaze under control within two hours.

Firefighters set up an incident command post and rerouted traffic from Red Hook and the Frydenhoj ballpark. One injured person from onboard the burning vessel was taken to Schneider Regional Medical Center with burns.

George said a total of 12 firefighters and five firefighting apparatus were on the scene to battle the blaze, commending the firefighters and other responding agencies for their work.
