Buck Island 50th Anniversary 2012 Lecture Series Continues July 12

In celebration of Buck Island Reef’s 50th anniversary year as a National Monument, the National Park Service continues its public lectures about Buck Island Reef National Monument on every second Thursday of each month.

July’s lecture entitled Hatchlings Off the Beach: Results from the Buck Island Reef Sea Turtle Program will be held from 5-6 p.m. on Thursday, July 12, in the Danish Guinea West India Company Warehouse/ Slave Market Building. This month’s lecture coincides with the beginning of the 25th year of sea turtle hatchery monitoring at Buck Island. The resource management staff will present findings of the program and what NPS hopes to see as it moves into the future. Most importantly NPS will review the general rules that apply during nesting season and why their enforcement is critical for hatchling survival.
The Christiansted National Historic Site parking lot will be free and open for this event until 7 p.m.
The future topics and dates for the lecture series are:
August 9 Buck Island’s Fisheries: Are Fishes Recovering
September 13 The Legacy of the Concessions Program at Buck Island Reef NM
October 11 Ups and Downs of Buck Island’s Coral Health
November 8 Buck Island’s Ancient Peoples-Seen and Unseen
December 13 The Rare and Unknown of Buck Island’s Marine Life
