Tourism Goes to Travel Pow Wow

The Tourism Department spread the word out about the territory’s terrific vacation possibilities this week in Los Angeles, at an event known as the International Pow Wow Conference.

According to a Tourism press release Thursday, the conference organized by the U.S. Travel Association generates international travel into the United States and is a top place to market the territory.

Tourism Commissioner Beverly Nicholson Doty said having a presence at the 2012 International Pow Wow will prove “invaluable” in keeping the territory “top-of-mind” among industry partners who influence summer vacation planning.

Throughout the week, the Tourism Department’s international sales team met with more than 65 tour operators from around the world. The V.I. group reaffirmed existing business relationships in Italy, Denmark and Canada but also met with tour operators based in Brazil, Chile, Russia and China in an attempt to increase overnight arrivals from countries pegged as emerging economic powerhouses.

Doty gave media interviews throughout the week to connect with key international and Southern Californian lifestyle and news publications, alerting journalists to recent developments such as the Sizzlin’ Sampler travel promotion and the opening of the Diageo rum factory Welcome Center on St. Croix.

Doty also met with U.S. Commerce Secretary John Bryson. Bryson is a member of the economic team working to grow in-bound tourism as part of President Obama’s job-creation strategies.
