St. Croix Foundation Hosts Creative Workshops by Erik Cork

The St. Croix Foundation’s Youth Advisory Council wishes to invite representatives from the media to a dynamic professional development workshop featuring highly sought-after consultant and motivational speaker Erik Corkfrom 9:45-11 a.m. on Friday, March 2, at the St. Croix Educational Complex. Cork will also serve as the keynote speaker for the Youth Councils’ Inaugural Youth Forum scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 3, at UVI’s Great Hall.
Erik Cork is the creator of the lively workshop “Rap, Rhythm & Rhyme: Rebuilding the Writing Foundation.” He is a nationally recognized writing consultant, who has conducted writing workshops for more than 300,000 students, parents and professional educators at over 250 school districts and universities throughout the United States and beyond. He is the founder of International Write Now Inc. and the former writing instructor for the University of Houston’s BRIDGE and MESET (Minority Enrichment Summer Engineering Training) programs, as well as a former writer-in-residence for the nationally–acclaimed WITS (Writers-In-The-Schools) organization.
The workshop seeks to provide a “grammatical and verbal reawakening” while improving test scores and leading students to discovery. According to Cork’s Web site, “…this fast-paced writing workshop empowers students to systematically organize their thoughts and communicate them effectively on paper. Music, laughter, mnemonic devices and audience participation make it avisually stimulating and physically intoxicating buffet of teachable techniques for professional educators who are absolutely serious about reaching each and every one of their students.”
The workshop is sponsored by the St. Croix Foundation’s Youth Advisory Council and serves to provide academic and social enrichment opportunities for youth in our community.
The Foundation believes Cork’s message of effective communication is a critical one for both students and language arts teachers in the territory.
