The Virgin Islands Special Olympics team continued to rake in medals Sunday as they competed in the 13th Special Olympics World Games in Athens.
Janice Lee, head of the U.S.V.I. delegation, said the team brought in four medals in athletics/track and field. Timmy Laurent took gold in the running long jump and a bronze in the 00 meters.
Shamara Barnes followed with a bronze in the 200-meter race, and Khaliel Meyers finished first in his 100-meter competition.
In swimming, Michael Pessante added to his medal total with a bronze in the 200-meter breast stroke, recording a personal best.
The mixed bowling team got off to a strong start Sunday but faltered down the stretch, Lee said, finishing eighth.
The team of Virgin Islands special athletes finished the games with eight gold medals, three silver and 14 bronze, plus the following ribbons – one fourth place, five fifths, two sixths, and six eighths.
A dozen of the territory’s 14 competitors won at least one medal, Lee said, adding "I think that’s wonderful!"
The team is preparing to fly home from Europe, scheduled to arrive back in the territory on Tuesday.
