V.I. residents who’ve pondered a Seaborne Airlines flight to San Juan to meet connecting flights, but balked at having to take a taxi between airports, take heart: Seaborne starts daily flights to San Juan International Airport in January.
Seaborne’s flight schedule has been designed to provide time to make most major airline connections at San Juan International, according to a statement from Seaborne. Starting Jan. 12, early morning flights to San Juan International will leave the U.S. Virgin Islands as early as 6:15 a.m. and return as late as 6:15 p.m., with flights throughout the day, seven days a week.
Seaborne will fly to San Juan International from St. Thomas, St. Croix and Vieques, Puerto Rico, according to the company.
Seaborne Airlines will continue to provide flights into San Juan’s smaller, older Isla Grande Airport, making the airline the only one serving two locations in San Juan, according to Seaborne.
Puerto Rico welcomes the change as a boost to Puerto Rico’s role as a regional hub.
“One of the strategies for the development of air access is to increase the flights offered between the Islands of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, which strengthens our position as a hub in the Caribbean,” said Puerto Rico Economic Development Secretary Jose Perez-Riera in a statement from Seaborne. “The introduction of Seaborne Airlines flights from the Luis Munoz Marin International Airport will help us advance our mission,” he went on.
Jamie Lopez, principal officer of development of the Puerto Rico Department of Economic Development and Commerce, agreed.
“Air access to Vieques and Culebra is key for their economic development. Certainly the increase of Seaborne Airlines flights will bring a positive economic impact to the islands of Puerto Rico,” Lopez said in the Seaborne release.
