Committee Seeks Nominations for Farmers and Home Gardener of the Year

The St. Thomas-St. John Agriculture and Food Fair Committee is seeking nominations from the public for three awards at this year’s fair. The awards are to be given to the Crop Farmer of the Year, the Livestock Farmer of the Year and the Home Gardener of the Year.

The Home Gardener of the Year award will be going to a home owner and gardener who is successfully growing fruits and vegetables around his/her home. Size does not matter – you don’t have to have a large yard to win this award. A home gardener with flourishing plants grown in pots on a balcony will be given as much consideration as another with a yard full of plants.
The Crop Farmer of the Year and the Livestock Farmer of the Year will be awarded to a producer whose farming operation is registered with the Department of Agriculture. If you know of someone or consider yourself an excellent crop farmer, livestock farmer or home gardener, please nominate the person or yourself by contacting the fair committee at: The V.I Department of Agriculture (774-5182) or UVI’s Cooperative Extension Service (693-1080).
It is requested that nominations are submitted by Oct. 29, so that the committee has time to choose the awardees before the fair. The fair will be held on Nov. 20-21. Further information on the judging criteria can be found by contacting the numbers given above.
By giving public recognition to those who, by hard work and dedication, are successfully growing food or raising livestock on St Thomas and St John, the Agriculture and Food Fair Committee hopes to stimulate others to emulate their successes.
