Barracudas Hold Off Caribs in Varsity Hoops Action

Amadeus Derweer scores two of his eight points during the Caribs' third-quarter run.The Educational Complex Barracudas withstood a late rally by the Central High Caribs Monday afternoon in a boy’s varsity basketball game on the EC campus to win by a score of 77-71. The victory assured the Barras of home-court advantage throughout the local boy’s varsity basketball playoffs.
The way this game started out, no one expected the finish would be as excited as it was. But the Caribs, who trailed by as many as 26 points in the game, made a run in the third that saw them reduce the lead to six at one point.
“I did not expect Central to lay down for the entire game,” said Complex coach Dean Heywood. “I expected them to make a run, but I did not expect the score to get this close; however my boys toughed it out in the end.”
The Barras exploded out of the gates in the first two quarters, and before the Caribs knew what hit them were down 46-21 heading into the locker room at halftime. Salim Ross and Chris Sealey led the Barras first-half onslaught with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The Caribs, led by eight points apiece from Rasheed Swanson and Amadeus Derweer, began their comeback in the third quarter, outscoring the home team 29-14 to cut the lead to 10 points at 60-50 at the end of the period.
They would cut the lead to six points at 60-54 after scoring the first two baskets in the final quarter but would get no closer, as the Barras were able to hold on for the 77-71 victory.
Sealey led three Barras in double figures with a game-high 22 points that included four bombs from beyond the arc. Ross and Tamoi Francis finished with 19 and 14 points, respectively.
For the Caribs, it was Derweer leading four teammates in double figures with a team-high 19 points. Swanston and Kadeem Jones both netted 12, and Javier Martinez knocked down 11 points for the Caribs in a losing effort.
In other local sports on Monday, there was one game in the Bob Owens Slow Pitch Softball League. In that contest the Cartel hammered Speak the Word Ministries 12-2 to advance to this year’s final four.
It was the Cartel with 12 runs on 15 hits and three errors, while the STW finished with two runs on four hits and two errors.
The winning pitcher was James Smith, and Ulric Benjamin got the loss. Top batters for the winners were Daren Lewis (3 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs) and Pedro Gonzalez (3 for 3 with two RBIs). For STW, Norbert Pickering was 1 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs.
The action continues Tuesday night as the final four teams battle for a place in the championship game. The Seaborne Stealers will take on Wyatt Heat, while the Cartel will face Softball Inc.
